Ultra marathons and trail hikes

Postby diggingtrail » Mon Jun 21, 2010 5:38 pm

So I did my first ultra this past weekend and got bitten by the bug. See my post here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=284
I learned a lot, as almost everybody does in their first ultra. I made a lot of mistakes but overall I am happy with my performance. I'd like to do at least one more this year. Anybody else interested? I wouldn't mind having a training partner and or race partner. I'm not looking to set any records or anything like that. Just finishing an event in a reasonable time is my goal. Any suggestions on good events in the general area?

Not sure that I'd consider it an 'ultra', but the Megatransect is a relatively close event. https://ultrahike.com/Home_Page.php

Hailing from Western PA, I'm partial to some of the races there. The big one that requires some training is the Laurel Highlands Ultra http://www.laurelultra.com/, which definitely meets anyone's definition of an ultra, especially given the technical nature of the trail. If you want a taste of the Laurel Highlands trail yet this year, and don't mind a little biking and paddling with your trail running, Grass Roots Racing's Point 2 Point (P2P) adventure race is in October. http://www.rootsrace.com/event_p2p/index.htm It's a blast, and will likely fill up this year given the success of the first running. It ends at the Golden Triangle 121 miles from the start.
